The Lansdowne Public Library held its final event of The Big Read by joining with Lansdowne's Sofa Cinema for the film version of Carson McCullers' The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Sofa Cinema was gracious enough to choose the film as their May selection and the film was screened at Lansdowne's new Cinema 16:9 theater, was held in conjunction with the Library's ongoing Big Read program. After the film was screened, participants gathered in the theater lobby for lively discussion.
This was the final event in the six week long Big Read program. Other events included book discussions, children's sign language programs, a lecture on the life of Carson McCullers and a lecture on the History of the Deaf Community. These events were funded by a grant from the National Endowments for the Arts. Lansdowne was one of only 208 communities nationwide selected to participate in The Big Read.

On Wednesday, November 19, 2008, the Lansdowne Public Library was presented with a banner to officially become a Family Place Library. Family Place Libraries™ is a network of children's librarians nationwide who believe that literacy begins at birth and that libraries can help build healthy communities by nourishing healthy families.
Expanding the traditional role of children's services, Family Place builds on the knowledge that good health, early learning, parental involvement and supportive communities play a critical role in young children's growth and development.
Family Place Libraries redesign the library environment to be welcoming and appropriate for children beginning at birth; connect parents with the resources, programs and services offered at the library and other family service agencies; and reach out to non-traditional library users. This creates the network families need to nurture their child's development during the critical first years of life and helps ensure all children enter school ready and able to learn.
The core components of a Family Place Library include collections of books, toys, music and multimedia materials for babies, toddlers, parents and service providers, and a specially designed, welcoming space within the children's area for families with young children. Further the library also holds a five week Parent/Child Workshops that involves toddlers and their parents and caregivers; features local professionals who serve as resources for parents; emphasizes the role of parents as the first teachers of their children; facilitates early intervention; and teaches strategies for healthy child development and early literacy.
This program also promotes coalition-building with community agencies that serve families and young children to connect parents to community resources and develop programs and services tailored to meet local needs and outreach to new and non-traditional library users, especially parents and very young children (beginning at birth).
The next session of the Parent/Child Workshop will take place in Spring 2009. Please call or e-mail for more information.
The Lansdowne Public Library now offers free wi-fi access. Bring your laptop in, enjoy the working air conditioning and log on. A site key is required to access the network. Just ask for it at the front desk.
